Brief :
I had the exciting opportunity to illustrate A Very Asian Guide to Japanese Food, a delightful children’s book that invites young readers to explore the vibrant world of Japanese cuisine. Authored by Naoko Takei Moore and published by Gloo Books, this project celebrates the joy, tradition, and unique flavors of Japanese food. As a Japanese person living in the U.S., I wanted to share my love for Japanese cuisine and culture with young readers. The book features beloved classics like Onigiri (rice balls), miso soup, and Nabe (hot pot), as well as modern favorites like Sando (Japanese sandwiches) and ramen, showing how food brings people together.
In my illustrations, I aimed to create cheerful and inviting pages that inspire kids to connect with food and culture. The book includes fun cooking scenes that encourage young readers to get involved in home cooking. My goal was to infuse warmth and a playful spirit into each page, creating a visual journey that brightens everyone’s dinner table.
