Introduction
Ever wondered exactly how to commission a food illustration?
Understanding the collaborative process helps you feel confident when hiring an illustrator for your next project. I’m Yoko, a professional food & lifestyle illustrator, and today I’m taking you behind the scenes of my creative workflow.
To make this guide practical, I’m showing you the step-by-step evolution of a recent project: a cozy Wine & Cheese Board illustration.
The 4-Phase Creative Process
Below is the typical workflow when you commission a food illustration with me. My goal is to ensure your vision comes to life beautifully and efficiently.
Phase 1: Show Your Ideas (Creative Brief)
Collaboration starts here. First, we discuss your vision. Whether you have a detailed creative brief or just a "tasty" concept, this phase is all about getting on the same page. We'll talk about the mood, the specific ingredients (like that perfect wedge of Brie!), and where the illustration will live.
Phase 2: Visualize Your Vision (Sketching Phase)
Now, the "I SKETCH" stage begins. I take your ideas and create a rough composition sketch. This focuses on mapping out the layout, ensuring the balance of the wine glasses and cheese board elements is just right before any final details are added. Your feedback at this stage is the foundation of the piece.

Phase 3: Our Feedback Loop: Review, Revise, Approve (Refinement)
This is the most exciting part of the journey—where "YOU REVIEW" and "WE FINALIZE" the details together. Based on your feedback from the initial sketch, I refine the lines and begin the full coloring process.
In this stage, we look at the illustration with fresh eyes. For this Wine & Cheese Board project, we realized something was missing to truly tell the story of a "ready-to-enjoy" moment. We decided to add a cheese knife to the composition.

Phase 4: Ready to Use! (Final Delivery)
The journey is complete! Once you approve the artwork, your commissioned food illustration is prepared for its final destination.
To ensure you receive the highest quality without clogging your inbox, I deliver your files (such as PSD, PNG, TIFF, or PDF) via professional file-sharing services like Smash or WeTransfer. You’ll receive a simple link to download your ready-to-use artwork seamlessly!
Ready to Bring Your Delicious Ideas to Life?
I hope this guide has given you a clear understanding of how to commission a food illustration that perfectly suits your brand. Understanding this workflow is the first step toward a successful and stress-free collaboration!
