Have you ever tried a Japanese egg sandwich, known as Tamago Sando, from a Japanese convenience store? Many travelers make it one of their first stops after arriving in Japan, picking one up from convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Lawson, or FamilyMart.
Others discover it at Japanese bakeries and cafés in cities like New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, and San Francisco—and almost everyone says the same thing: "How can such a simple egg sandwich taste this good?"
As a Japanese person who grew up eating Tamago Sando, I completely understand the excitement. It's one of Japan's most beloved comfort foods: simple, creamy, satisfying, and somehow even better than it looks.
The best part? You don't have to travel to Japan to enjoy one.
If you can boil eggs, you can make Tamago Sando at home. Here's the recipe my mom has been making for our family for years.
Let's get started!

How to Make Authentic Japanese Egg Sandwich (Tamago Sando) Recipe
This is the Tamago Sando I grew up eating in Japan—simple, comforting, and easy to make at home.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
6 large eggs
3 tbsp Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie is a favorite, but regular mayo works too!)
1 tsp mustard
1–2 tsp sugar (*optional, but I highly-recommend!)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
1 tbsp softened unsalted butter
4 slices Japanese milk bread (shokupan) or soft white sandwich bread
Softened butter for spreading on the bread
Instructions
Boil the eggs. Cook the eggs for 10 minutes, then cool them in ice water.
Make the egg filling. Peel and mash the eggs in the bowl, leaving a few small chunks for a nice texture. Add mayonnaise, mustard, *sugar, salt, pepper, and softened butter. Mix until creamy. (*Adding 1–2 teaspoons of sugar doesn't make the filling sweet—it simply balances the flavors.)
Chill the filling. Refrigerate the filling for about 20 minutes. This helps the butter firm up slightly, making the filling thicker and easier to spread.
Serve! Lightly spread softened butter on each slice of bread, spread the egg filling to make sandwiches. Enjoy!
Enjoy Your Homemade Tamago Sando
Whether you've been dreaming about the famous Japanese convenience store egg sandwich or recreating one you enjoyed while traveling, I hope this recipe brings a little taste of Japan into your kitchen.
Tamago Sando is proof that delicious food doesn't have to be complicated. With just a few simple ingredients, you can make one of Japan's most beloved comfort foods right at home.
